Texas Graduate Center and Region One host Math for Teachers Workshop

Area math teachers throughout the Rio Grande Valley had an opportunity to take part in a lecture given by Harvard Math Professor Dr. James Tanton.

Tanton's workshop School Arithmetic and Algebra made Ridiculously Easy drew the attention of many math teachers.

Teachers who's school districts are part of the MATHTEACH Collaborative are offered leadership and math workshops annually at Region One. The MATHTEACH Collaborative is a Math for Teachers Masters Degree Program partnership with Harvard University and the Texas Graduate Center.

The Texas Graduate Center offers distance learning training facilities in Mercedes, Texas. Sixteen teachers are currently involved in the Masters program that takes three years to complete.

James Tanton (PhD. Mathematics, Princeton University, 1994) is a research mathematician deeply interested in bridging the gap between the mathematics experienced by school students and the creative mathematics practiced and explored by mathematicians. He worked as a college professor for a decade, as a high-school teacher for a decade, and is now the Mathematician in Residence at the Mathematical Association of America in Washington D.C.
